Hold Fast

It was not uncommon for our parents to tell us at an early age to “hold on tight” to their hand as we were walking in crowded or unfamiliar areas.  As we got older, the same admonition could be heard in regards to our safety when riding in/on vehicles or on carnival/fair rides

As children of God, we receive similar instruction.  On a number of instances in the New Testament we are told to “hold fast” to something.  Take note of the following:

“Test all things; hold fast what is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

“Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 1:13; also 2 Thessalonians 2:15).

“but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end” (Hebrews 3:6).

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession” (Hebrews 4:14; also Hebrews 10:23).

“Behold, I am coming quickly!  Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown” (Revelation 3:11).

From these Scriptures, we can see the importance of “holding fast,” for in so doing we can maintain a faithful relationship with the Lord, and ultimately receive “the crown of glory that does not fade away” (1 Peter 5:4).
