When we speak of God, we often identify Him as our Creator (1 Peter 4:19); our Provider, or as James 1:17 says “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights”; and our Preserver or Sustainer as we read in 2 Timothy 4:18. Not only that, we call God our Protector, a term that is often described in Scripture as “our Shield.”
The book of Psalms, on numerous occasions, identifies God in this fashion. Take note of the following:
“But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head” (Psa. 3:3).
“The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped” (Psa. 28:7).
“Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield” (Psa. 33:20).
“For the Lord is a sun and shield” (Psa. 84:11).
These are, indeed, words of comfort. But may we not forget the remainder of Psalm 84:11 where it says, “The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” Or as we learn from the book of Proverbs, “Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him” (Prov. 30:5). May we faithfully do as the Lord says so that we will be blessed with His protective care.
