Our Biblical ‘Mission’

When I was younger, one of my favorite television shows was “Mission Impossible.”  And I always looked forward to its introduction where, after a greeting to “Mr. Phelps,” he was told “Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to . . .,” followed by what that mission would be.

In considering this, I’m reminded of the ‘mission’ that we have as Christians.  As the apostles were instructed by Jesus to “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19), we have the same ‘commission’ to “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).  Without ‘omission’ we are to share with others the necessity of ‘submission’ to the will of God, including belief in Jesus as the Son of God, for “whoever believes in Him will receive ‘remission’ of sins” (Acts 10:43), repenting of one’s sins (Acts 3:19), ‘confession’ of Christ before man (Romans 10:9-10), and being baptized for the ‘remission’ of sins (Acts 2:38).  If we have done so faithfully, and our hearers have done according to the Lord’s stipulations, they will gain ‘admission’ into His body, the church we read about in Acts 2 where “those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them” (vs. 41), as well as “And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved” (vs. 47).

May we accept the ‘mission’ the Lord has given us to do, and share the gospel message, the good news of salvation in Jesus Christ with others!
