Take the Name of Jesus with You: Philippians 2:10

Names are designations we are given to honor a relative, highlight a prominent place, or ensure a distinction or difference from other individuals. As God’s children, we wear a unique name, CHRISTIAN. It is a name from Jesus which is above all other Philippians 2:9. It is a name which is more excellent than any other Hebrews 1:4. It is the only name which calls out salvation Acts 4:12. We often sing a song which encourages us to “take the name of Jesus with you.” So, we ask today, how can one take the name of Jesus with us?

First, we can take the name of Jesus with us if we have Godly speech. Christ’s apostles, as well as his disciples today, were preachers and teachers who watched what they spoke and how they spoke it. In Mark 8:38, Christ states that if one is ashamed of his words, they are ashamed of Christ. That is why Paul was so adamant in “not being ashamed of the gospel of Christ,” Romans 1:16. But Godly speech must come from a Godly heart. The apostle James illustrates this concept in James 3:8-11. In this analogy, Paul emphasizes that good water and bad cannot come out of the same fountain. It is contrary to the laws of nature. Therefore, corrupt communication is in contrast with the Christian’s nature. Scripture guides our speech: Colossians 4:6 our speech must be with grace, seasoned salt, and Ephesians 4:25 our speech is to be truthful. Unfortunately, many of the lost we encounter have heard enough of man’s spin on the scriptures or man’s opinion on how to live righteously. Instead, they need a strong, authentic, Bible-proven speech.

Christians must be smart about their station in life. If we are to win souls, we must take the name of Jesus with us in our knowledge. It is the most valuable gift we can give our families, friends, and associates. The world’s knowledge is not what we want, but rather, we should develop our sensibilities in the knowledge tied to God’s grace-2 Peter 3:18. This is the only way we can be pleasing to God and show mankind the necessity for taking the name of Jesus with us wherever we go.
