Christians must be prayerful people. However, many have the wrong idea about this important component of faith. Prayer is not about informing or persuading God but talking and connecting with Him. Through prayer, we show gratitude, show respect, and show our dependence on Him. It is truly a God-man relationship. To make sure we are pleasing to God, here are a few key reminders for us to utilize in our prayer life.
First, we are to pray earnestly. According to the original Greek, earnest means, “outstretched.” Christians must pray fervently or deeply in their communication to God. Scriptures give us examples such as the prophet Elijah, James 5:16, and Jesus Christ, Luke 22:44.
Second, we are to persevere when we pray. Unfortunately, many treat God as a waiter, whereas they cast a request to Heaven and then expect God to answer according to their requests. According to 1 Thessalonians 5:17, we must take every opportunity to pray. Prayer should happen at constant, regular intervals in our lives, Luke 18:1. Prayer is as much about attitude as it is action.
Third, we are to pray sincerely. Prayer must hold a prominent place in His church and with His people. Our prayers need to be sincere in their intentions, actions, and offerings. 1 Timothy 2:1 offers direction on what constitutes a sincere prayer. It should include supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving.
Finally, we are to pray with humility. Humility is a position of heart, not thinking less of oneself but less about oneself. James 4:6 reminds us that God favors the humble. Humility is the gauge of the mind that sets priorities and directs our perspective, Philippians 2:3-4.
To be the prayerful people God expects, we must clothe ourselves in humility 1 Peter 5:5.
If you need help with your prayer life, please let us help. By hearing God’s word, believing His word, repenting from your past life of sin, confessing Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and submitting your will to God in baptism, you can establish the only God-man relationship that will take you to Heaven.
